From Success to Significance - Living a Legacy

This is an idea which is receiving a lot of attention these days. Included in the conversation is the word legacy. I saw a definition of legacy recently; “It’s what people say about you when you aren’t around.” It doesn’t have anything to do with death! More like, it’s important to give them something good to talk about. (Speaking of something to talk about, above is a photo of me telling ghost stories for Halloween. Boo!) Being significant, in my mind, is all about doing something for others without expectation of admiration, gratitude, reward, or results.

For me, the parallel rail idea I use in my workshop illustrates reality closely. One rail of the train track represents our human journey, while the other represents our spiritual journey. The second rail is there whether we choose to acknowledge it or not - it’s what keeps us balanced, and our “train” on track! The more we acknowledge the spiritual aspects of our lives, the more aware we become of our fellow travelers and how interconnected we all are. By doing even small things to make life better for them without expecting admiration, gratitude, reward, or results, we begin to create and experience significance.

One of the best books I’ve read about this playing out in real life is Same Kind of Different as Me (Ron Hall/Denver Moore). It’s about a very successful art dealer who finally gives in to his wife’s request that he help her serve food at a local soup kitchen. What happened next was completely unexpected. I highly recommend you read this book. You’ll have a different viewpoint about life. Then pass it along to a friend!

Important note: You don’t have to be rich or famous to create a legacy of true significance. In this free download, you’ll find examples of what a living legacy can look like for people like you and me. If you want to go deeper, my online workshop, On the Right Track: Connecting the Stories of Your Life, provides tools and guidance for creating the life and legacy you’ve dreamed of.

In the meantime, have a Happy Halloween!
